About the lecture: Since Oct. 7, the Columbia campus churned with protests against Israel and concerns over free speech. Students and faculty both saw themselves as enmeshed in an unprecedented battle with the administration over free speech. But how unprecedented was this? For over a hundred years, Columbia College has been shaken by Jews and their distinct political beliefs. This talk looks at how Columbia has struggled across the long twentieth century to address issues raised by its Jewish students and their politics. Lunch provided upon registration. About Rebecca Kobrin: Rebecca Kobrin is the Russell and Bettina Knapp Associate Professor of American Jewish History. She works in the fields of immigration history, urban studies, business history, East European history and American Jewish History, specializing in modern Jewish migration.
