About the lecture: Worldly success is an important aspect of human flourishing, and Jews have excelled in that type of success in the modern period. Professor Eisen will argue on the basis of his most recent book that traditional rabbinic Judaism played a critical in preparing Jews for worldly success, even though the rabbis who shaped that form of Judaism never envisioned it serving this role.
About the speaker: Robert Eisen is Professor of Religion and Judaic Studies and Director of the Judaic Studies Program at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. The focus of his most recent research is approaches to peace and violence in Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. His other areas of interest include comparative religion, Jewish philosophy, and Jewish biblical interpretation.
Cosponsored with Valley Beit Midrash and VOSJCC.
